Embracing Photo Opportunities Outside at Nursery

Rachel Keeling writes in Nursery World (May 2021) about how nurseries embrace the unexpected opportunities that nature and being outside can bring. It made me think how, that as photographers, we do too!

The nurseries that we work with are big fans of nature and being outside. This means as well as standard play that a child might do inside, we also get to capture reactions and expressions as children interact with the garden as it grows.

We get to capture a photo of a child as they jump over shadows from the clouds as the weather changes during the day, experiencing joy at finding things like ladybird, bugs and butterflies!

As Rachel writes, natural materials like twigs and feathers can be found in a garden and create interest for children. As photographers, this serves as an opportunity for interaction with a child, that leads to beautifully natural smiles, excitement and wonder in a face.

Some of our best photographs have been as children have clambered over low hanging branches on a tree and popped out from behind bushes or garden greenery!

Here’s to more outside play and wonderful photography opportunities, where for a Mum or Dad we capture a moment where their child’s authentic smile and genuine happiness is clear for all to see.
